DEERFIELD BEACH, FL - Authorities said a motorcyclist died after a collision with a tractor-trailer in Deerfield Beach last week.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies and rescue crews responded to the scene on Southwest 10th Street Sept. 2 at about 6:42 a.m.

Investigators determined that the driver of a Volvo semi tractor-trailer stopped in the designated left turn lane on Southwest 10th Street to turn north onto Southwest 12th Avenue.

The truck driver, 25-year-old Sergio Bessa, turned across the westbound lanes into the path of a Suzuki GSX-S motorcycle approaching the intersection that was driven by 30-year-old Joao Paulo Carvalho of West Palm Beach.

The motorcycle struck the passenger side front tandem axle of the  tractor-trailer in a T-bone type crash and came to a rest in the intersection.

Paramedics pronounced Carvalho dead at the scene. Bessa was not injured and remained at the scene. BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the wreck.
