News: 2 children dead, 4 injured after being struck by hit-and-run driver in Wilton Manors

WILTON MANORS, FL – Authorities said two children were struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Broward County Monday afternoon, WPLG reports.

Police and rescue crews responded to the area of Northwest 9th Avenue and Northwest 24th Street outside an apartment building in Wilton Manors after the crash took place at about 2:50 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found that a total of six children had been hit by a vehicle. Two of them were pronounced dead at the scene. There was no immediate confirmation of their ages.

The four others, ages 1, 2, 6 and 9, were transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where one of the children was listed in critical condition.  The three others were in stable condition.

One witness told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the driver of the vehicle drove up onto a sidewalk to get around a bus before hitting the children. The driver left the scene after the incident and is now being sought by law enforcement authorities.  As of Monday evening, no description of the vehicle involved had been released.

Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide unit are continuing to investigate the crash. Anyone with further information was asked to contact Broward Crime Stoppers.

Wilton Manors Police said a family reunification center was being set up at the City Hall Emergency Operation Center.
