MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL - A multi-vehicle crash left a truck driver hospitalized and caused major backups on Florida's Turnpike Wednesday morning, WPLG reports.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles were involved in the accident in the turnpike's southbound lanes near Okeechobee Road at about 5:15 a.m.

The tractor-trailer went off the side of the roadway, hit an embankment, and overturned. The other vehicles also flipped over.

State troopers and emergency crews responded and were able to extricate the truck driver from the cab of the vehicle, with the help of a trauma surgeon who was flown to the scene.

The driver was transported to an area trauma center, but no details were released on his condition.  The total number of injuries was not yet clear, but authorities said none of the injuries were regarded as life-threatening.

The turnpike's southbound lanes were closed to traffic in the area while the wreckage was being cleared.
