News: Person of interest identified in hit-and-run that killed child in Fort Pierce

FORT PIERCE, FL – Police reported new developments Friday in a hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a child in Fort Pierce.

WPTV reported that police had identified a person of interest in the case and had also located the vehicle involved in the incident.

The crash occurred Thursday morning in the area of Skylark Drive and Oleander Avenue.  Authorities said a 10-year-old girl was crossing the street at about 6:15 a.m. to catch her bus for school when she was struck by a white, four-door sedan.

Investigators said the driver of the sedan had gone around the bus while it was stopped with its red lights flashing and stop sign extended. After hitting the girl, the driver then took off without stopping to help.

The victim was pronounced dead after being taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center.

Police said the vehicle was found later on Thursday afternoon. The identity of the person of interest has not yet been released.

According to Fort Pierce police, the driver will be charged with hit-and-run with serious bodily injury causing death.
