NEWS: Jury Awards Highest Malpractice Award in Arizona History
This past November, an Arizona jury awarded a family $33 million in damages, the largest medical malpractice verdict in state history. The jury found Banner Health Hospital liable for a newborn’s birth injury. Greyson Griepentrog suffered a brain injury called hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy from oxygen deprivation.
The lawsuit alleged that hospital employees spent 14 hours administering a labor-inducing drug, despite a number of red flags calling for an emergency C-section.
Per Law 360, “Plaintiffs’ counsel said that hopefully the verdict, which came in at $31.5 million but was later raised to $33 million, will serve as a wake-up call for healthcare providers to know that Arizonans will not tolerate patient safety violations.”
The case is Griepentrog v. Banner Health et al., case number CV2020-052367, in the Superior Court of Arizona, Maricopa County.
