SUNRISE, FL – Police said a driver died in a car accident at an intersection in Sunrise late Thursday night, WPLG reports.
Authorities responded to the scene in the area of Northwest 136th Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard near the Sawgrass Mills mall at about 11:30 p.m.
According to investigators, the driver of a Nissan sedan was stopped at a red light at that location when their vehicle was struck from behind by a Lexus SUV. The driver of the Lexus had been speeding northbound towards the intersection when the collision occurred, police said.
The Nissan driver, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the Lexus sustained minor injuries and were transported to Broward Health Medical Center.
Traffic was shut down in both directions at the intersection while the scene was being investigated before reopening several hours later.
