News: Collision in Fort Lauderdale leaves driver dead, passenger injured

FORT LUADERDALE, FL – Police said one person died and another was seriously injured following a collision in Fort Lauderdale Sunday morning.

WPLG reports the crash happened when the driver of a BMW went through a red light in the vicinity of West Broward Boulevard and Northwest 24th Avenue.

The BMW struck a Chevrolet sedan that was attempting to make a left turn onto Northwest 24th Avenue. Police said the Chevy driver had the green light at the time.  The impact of the collision sent the BMW onto the sidewalk, where it hit a light pole and then caught fire.

A passenger in the BMW, identified as 20-year-old Chadaja Bess, was pronounced dead after being transported to Broward Health Medical Center. The BMW driver, 25-year-old Chavalier Johnson of Fort Lauderdale, was being treated for his injuries at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The Chevy driver, 34-year-old Kenneth Francis of Lauderdale Lakes, was not hurt.

Police are investigating the accident, and there was no word yet on whether charges will be filed against Johnson.
