Auto parts manufacturer Takata has already been responsible for tens of millions of auto recalls, due to defective airbags. Now, the defect threatens to affect millions of additional vehicles.
ConsumerReports.org reports that the recall comes as a result of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into the airbags. The investigation covers dozens of manufacturers’ vehicles between 2001 and 2019 and includes both driver and passenger-side airbags.

The recalled units reportedly do not contain a chemical drying agent called a desiccant. This lack of the desiccant could allow moisture to build up and disrupt the proper deployment of the airbag in the case of a crash.
The defect has resulted in various crashes, leaving at least 19 deaths and over 400 injuries.
