Why Did the Norwegian Epic Crash into a Pier?

What caused the Norwegian Epic cruise ship to crash into a pier?

According to the Daily Mail, the ship was on its way from Florida to the British Virgin Islands when it suffered from a mechanical issued on the third day of the seven day voyage. The ship’s captain directed the vessel toward Puerto Rico, and it was there that the ship crashed into the mooring.

Norwegian issued a statement about the incident, which says in part that the crash occurred as the ship was “maneuvering into Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico with a local pilot on board & the help of two tug boats.” The statement says that the crash was caused by “prevailing winds caused the ship to veer towards the pier, damaging two mooring points at Pier 3 East.”
