Reckless Driving Leads to Surge in Pedestrian Accidents
In March of last year, studies released by Smart Growth America, a pedestrian-safety organization, revealed that South Florida, including Miami, ranks 13th in the nation for pedestrian deaths. Florida, as a whole, ranked first. According to this study, Florida averages 1,675 pedestrian deaths yearly or 2.8 deaths per 100,000 people. The national average is 1.89 per 100,000.
Florida was more deadly for pedestrians to begin with, but according to a recent article in the New York Times, things have only gotten worse since the pandemic. There are likely several factors behind this, but a large one may be simple carelessness.
Dr. David Spiegel, director of Stanford Medical School’s Center on Stress and Health, suggests two major factors may be “salience saturation” and “social disengagement.” According to Dr. Spiegel, people are oversaturated with fears about the pandemic, making it seem like they get a pass on other threats.
Threats posed to pedestrians by motor vehicles never really go away, though. Disengagement, inattention, speeding, and other reckless behaviors place pedestrians and other motorists in danger. Always. When you or someone you love suffers injury due to this type of behavior, it’s a good idea to work with a law firm with a proven history of securing large verdicts and settlements for victims of serious injury.
