NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FL – A police officer in North Miami Beach was hospitalized Thursday after being struck by a hit-and-run suspect, according to WSVN.

Police said the officer had been trying to stop a woman who tried to flee the scene of a crash in the area of Northeast 172nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard at about 1 p.m. The woman, driving a red car, hit the officer and knocked him to the ground. North Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Rand said the driver tried to keep going and shots were then fired, though it was not yet clear whether the shots came from the officer who was struck.

The officer was seriously injured and transported to an area hospital. The driver was also hospitalized and was listed in stable condition. Police said she could face several charges stemming from the incident.

Police shut down Biscayne Boulevard near 172nd Street while they were responding to the scene.
