News: Driver killed when car collides with SUV on I-95 south

MARTIN COUNTY, FL – A car accident left a driver dead and shut down southbound lanes on Interstate 95 for hours early Monday morning, WPTV reports.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash involved a car and an SUV that were both headed south on I-95 near Baker Road in Martin County at about 4:30 a.m.

As the vehicles were traveling in the left lane, the driver of the car swerved to the right to avoid hitting the SUV, but struck the back of the other vehicle.

The car went off the road, crashed into a culvert and plunged into a lake, investigators said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  He was a 24-year-old man from Monterey, California whose name was not released.  The other driver, a 29-year-old resident of Palm Beach County, was not injured.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were closed near the scene before reopening at about 10:30 a.m.  The FHP is investigating the cause of the accident.
