News: Crash involving tanker on Florida’s Turnpike injures driver, slows traffic

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL – Crews were at the scene of a tanker crash on Florida’s Turnpike Friday morning that caused a major fuel spill and extensive traffic backups.

According to WPLG, the fuel tanker was one of four vehicles involved in the accident in the turnpike’s southbound lanes near Bird Road at about 6:15 a.m.

A trauma alert was declared for the driver of the overturned tanker, who was transported to Kendall Regional Medical Center.

It was believed that up to 7,500 gallons of fuel may have been spilled onto the roadway.

Southbound lanes of the turnpike were closed near the scene of the crash while cleanup efforts were underway, causing heavy delays.  Drivers were advised to exit the turnpike at Bird Road and go south on Southwest 107th Avenue as an alternate route.
