News: Alleged drunk driver arrested for fatal crash in the Florida Keys

MARATHON, FL – Police have arrested an alleged drunk driver in connection with a fatal crash in the Florida Keys Monday, NBC Miami reports.

43-year-old Mike Muthama is charged with negligent manslaughter and seven felony counts of driving drunk and causing serious bodily harm.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Muthama was driving a 2015 Maserati Ghibli on the Seven Mile Bridge and was trying to pass a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan as both vehicles were headed north. The Maserati hit the back of the Volkswagen, and the impact sent the Volkswagen into the southbound lanes.

A passenger in the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified by relatives as 85-year-old Ompora Huaman of Miramar.  Four other members of her family who were in the vehicle were hospitalized, including a 15-year-old girl.

Muthama’s blood alcohol level registered at more than twice the legal limit after he was taken to a Marathon hospital. He was arrested and booked into jail after being medically cleared. He was being held on no bond, and is due in court August 8th.

The bridge was shut down in both directions for about five hours following the accident.
