More Information on Friday’s Deadly Boat Crash Off Key Biscayne

More information is becoming available about the deadly boat collision off Key Biscayne Friday night.

Local10.com reports that the crash occurred at about 10:30 p.m. when two vessels, approximately 21 feet and 30 feet in length, collided near the Nixon Beach Sandbar. One of the boats was carrying seven people while the other had five people aboard.

The collision was so powerful that all of the boats’ occupants were thrown from the vessels. Complicating matters was the fact that there were children aboard at least one of the vessels and many of the victims did not know how to swim. “They were saying that they couldn’t swim and asking for help,” said witness Xavier Ruiz.

First responders, including the US Coast Guard and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, arrived on the scene in time to transport 10 survivors to area hospitals including Mercy Hospital and Ryder trauma center.

Two of the 12 victims died.
