Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are recalling tens of thousands of vehicles due to a defective trunk latch.
ConsumerReports.org reports that Hyundai is recalling 348,158 vehicles and automaker Kia is recalling an additional 253,074 cars.
The defect can cause truck latches not to function properly, especially in high temperatures. The defective latches can prevent the trucks from opening from the inside. The risk is especially dangerous to children who may be playing in the vehicles during the warm months.
Though the automakers have not reported any injuries stemming from the defect, apparently at least 40 car owners have filed vehicle warranty claims as a result of the defect.
