News: Pedestrian fatally struck by pickup truck in Pompano Beach

POMPANO BEACH, FL – The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred in Pompano Beach early Friday morning.

The BSO issued a news release on the incident that occurred in the 2700 block of North Dixie Highway at about 1:30 a.m.

Investigators said 40-year-old Norval Howard of Pompano Beach was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when he observed an object in the road, was not sure what it was, and drove over it.

Howard then turned around and realized that he had hit a pedestrian, the sheriff’s office said.  He positioned his vehicle to make sure there was no further impact.

Sheriff’s deputies and emergency crews arrived and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.  He was identified as 58-year-old Gregory Halowach of Pompano Beach.  The investigation determined that Halowach had been lying in the right thru lane of the roadway for unknown reasons.

Investigators do not consider speed or impairment as having been contributing factors in the incident.
