News: Man facing charges in crash that killed bicycle rider in Weston

WESTON, FL – Authorities said the suspect in a fatal crash in Weston has now been extradited to Broward County to face charges in the case, according to WPLG.

Last month, U.S. Marshals took 24-year-old Oion Skyvel Johnson into custody in Syracuse, New York, on a warrant for his arrest.

He was wanted for an incident on May 23, 2021 on Bonaventure Boulevard. Investigators said Johnson was driving a Kia Optima when he struck a bicycle rider from behind in the dedicated bicycle lane.  The bicyclist, 44-year-old Sunny LaValle of Weston, was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said its investigators determined that “Johnson had little to no sleep within the 36 hours prior to the crash, while intermittently consuming alcoholic beverages during that same timeframe which caused him to fall asleep while driving. Investigators said this lack of sleep, coupled with intermittent alcohol consumption, was a willful disregard for the safety of others.”

He has been charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving resulting in damage to property or a person.

During a court appearance on Wednesday, a judge ordered Johnson held in lieu of a $60,000 bond.
