MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL – A crash on the Florida’s Turnpike Wednesday injured a Miami-Dade police officer and his K-9 police dog, WSVN reports.

According to police, the officer’s Chevy Tahoe was involved in a collision with another vehicle in the turnpike’s northbound lanes near the exit for Southwest 216th Street at about 3:15 p.m.

The officer, a narcotics detective, and the dog were removed from the vehicle.  The officer was taken to Ryder Trauma Center, where he was reported to be in critical but stable condition with head and shoulder injuries. The K-9 was transported to an animal hospital with minor injuries.

Police said the officer was on duty and on a routine patrol when the accident occurred.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured and remained at the scene.

The northbound lanes of the turnpike were shut down for several hours between Southwest 211th and 152nd streets.
