News: 1 dead, 5 injured after Tamarac multi-vehicle crash

TAMARAC, FL – One person was killed and five others injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Tamarac on Tuesday night, according to a news release from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived at the scene in the 2700 block of West Commercial Boulevard shortly after 9 p.m.  Investigators determined that 22-year-old Nicholas Atkinson was driving a Ford Crown Victoria at a high rate of speed when he lost control. The Ford went onto a raised center median and crashed into a tree, splitting the vehicle in two.

The front half of Atkinson’s car continued into the eastbound lanes, where a piece of debris from the Ford hit a Chevy Suburban. The front half kept sliding across the roadway and struck the front of a Buick.  Atkinson was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Buick and four passengers sustained minor injuries.

Speed is considered to have been a contributing factor in the crash, detectives said.
