A Florida Sheriff’s deputy was killed in a vehicle crash on Sunday morning, his department has confirmed.

MySunCoast.com reports that Manatee County deputy 22-year-old Antonio Hernandez died in the crash. His department says that Hernandez had just finished training when he was involved in an off-duty crash.

Apparently, the crash was caused by a 72-year-old man who was switching lanes as he approached the exit at State Road 64, and crashed into the side of Hernandez’s car. The collision sent Hernandez into a grassy median where he crashed into a steel pole.

Hernandez was transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital where he later died.

In a statement, MCSO public information officer Randy Warren said “Antonio was a talented, hardworking deputy who showed professionalism and always had a smile. He will be missed..Please keep the Hernandez family, friends, and his law enforcement family in your thoughts and prayers.”
