Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Are you a distracted driver?

Three types of distractions can occur while driving:

  • Taking your eyes off of the road to read, type, rubberneck, etc.
  • Taking your hands off of the wheel to adjust controls, eat and drink, etc.
  • Taking your mind off of the task of driving

Some forms of distraction, such as handheld cellphone use, involve all three types of distraction. Others, such as thinking about your day instead of the traffic around you, involve only one. However, even the slightest distraction is a danger, placing everyone on the road at increased risk for serious or fatal injury.

The Scope of the Problem

There are around 50,000 auto accidents caused by distracted drivers in Florida every year. Thousands of these are injurious. Hundreds are fatal. All are unacceptable.

Nationally, there are more than 900,000 accidents caused by distracted drivers yearly, but this figure is assumed to be low. While it is a suspected factor in many motor vehicle accidents, it can be difficult to prove distraction was a contributor. If you have been injured or a loved one has been killed by a distracted driver, this makes having an experienced and aggressive legal team on your side all the more important.

What Are Your Rights?

When you sustain an injury in an accident caused by a distracted driver, you are entitled to hold that person accountable for all of your damages. This may include:

  • Property Damage
  • Lost Wages
  • Medical Expenses
  • Physical Pain
  • Emotional Suffering
