News: Head-on collision on Florida’s Turnpike kills 1, injured 3

FORT PIERCE, FL – A van and an SUV were involved in a fatal collision on Florida’s Turnpike in St. Lucie County Sunday morning.

According to TC Palm, the incident happened in the northbound lanes of the Turnpike near the 172 mile marker at about 6 a.m.  The Florida Highway Patrol said a 28-year-old man lost control while driving a van north and hit a guardrail. After rotating counterclockwise, the van was then struck head-on by a northbound SUV.

The van driver, a Decatur, Georgia resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 38-year-old driver of the SUV, a man from Miami, was seriously injured. Two passengers in the SUV, a man and a woman, sustained minor injuries.

The northbound lanes of the turnpike were shut down near Fort Pierce through early afternoon following the wreck before reopening at about 2:30 p.m.

The FHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
