BROWARD COUNTY, FL – A collision on U.S. Route 27 in northern Broward County Tuesday left one child dead and at least eight other people injured, WPLG reports.

Authorities said it appeared that a tractor-trailer rear-ended a Nissan sedan at mile marker 47 near the Palm Beach County line at about 2:40 p.m.

Nine people who were in the Nissan, two adults and seven children, were transported to area hospitals. One of the children, an 11-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the 31-year-old driver, 31- year-old passenger, 8 year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl are in serious condition. A 14 year-old girl, two 7-year-old boys and a 3-year-old boy sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer remained at the scene.  U.S. 27 was shut down in both directions for nearly an hour, causing major traffic backups through the area.
