POMPANO BEACH, FL - The Broward Sheriff's Office said it is investigating a crash in Lauderdale Lakes last month that left a motorcyclist dead.
The victim, identified as 26-year-old Scott Mendez, was driving a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle on State Road 7 Aug. 25 when the accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m.
Investigators said the driver of a Nissan Altima was traveling in the opposite direction and was making a turn towards an access road when the Kawasaki struck the passenger side of the car. The impact caused Mendez to be ejected from the motorcycle, which was ripped in half. He was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead the following day. The driver of the Nissan was hospitalized with minor injuries.
The BSO said excessive speed by Mendez is being considered as a factor in the crash. Witnesses told investigators that the motorcycle began to rapidly accelerate just before the collision.
