GIANT WAVES HIT LOUIS CRUISE LINE SHIP KILLING 2 AND INJURING FOURTEEN

Posted under: Injuries — Laurel Chernoby @ 5:29 am

On Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 3 huge waves hit the Louis Majesty, a cruise ship owned by the Greece based company Louis Cruise Lines. The waves were approximately 33 feet high and shattered windows at the front part of the ship on Deck 5, an area open to all passengers.

Of the 1,930 people onboard (580 of which were crewmembers), 2 individuals were killed and fourteen were injured. Injuries were caused mainly by flying broken glass. The injured passengers were treated on the ship and then sent to a hospital in Barcelona, Spain as a precaution.

“I thought I would end up in the sea, drowned,” said Anna Lita, who had a black eye and bandages on her head and hand Thursday.

Lita’s husband Carlo, 69, who had been beside her on a sofa, was thrown in the air and ended up with five stitches in the head and a leg injury.

Another Italian, Giovanni Zanoni, said that after the waves blew out the windows of the lounge, the ceiling caved in and pandemonium broke out.

“People were screaming, panicking. They were grabbing life vests,” Zanoni said. He said he saw one huge shard of glass hit a man in the face, killing him. It took a while to find the body because he was under the wreckage of the ceiling, Zanoni said.

Even though the next scheduled cruise has been cancelled, the Louis Majesty will resume cruises starting on March 14, 2010 after some much needed repairs.

Because of these limitations, it is important to have representation from an experienced attorney who can ensure you take the necessary steps in case of cruise ship accidents.
